With dramatic cliffs, mesmerising sunsets and some of the finest food, Cornwall is one of the best places to spend Valentine’s Day. Think champagne with a sea view, fresh oysters and, if you’re really lucky, some mighty fine proposal spots. With our cosy retreats to spend the nights in, we’ve collated our top ten romantic things to do in our breathtaking county.
1. Stargazing in St. Agnes
Pack a bottle of bubbles, a blanket and a picnic, wait for the sun to set on a clear day and get over to St Agnes Head. A designated dark sky site, the stars can be seen with minimal light pollution and you’ll have a good chance of spotting the Milkyway. Keep your fingers crossed for a shooting star, and make your wish.
2. Discover somewhere remote
Grab your walking boots, your partner and a map and explore. Nothing binds a relationship quite as well as trying to read a map together, and the feeling of discovering somewhere that seems totally untouched is a really unique feeling – one that neither you nor your partner will forget. Why not discover your special place, and make a tradition of coming back to it and making memories year on year?
3. Experience Cornwall’s take on fine dining
Treat yourselves to a tasting menu of dreams at Restaurant Nathan Outlaw in Port Isaac. Featuring the freshest Cornish seafood and the delicious experience of Nathan Outlaw, if you’re really celebrating then pair the tasting menu with the wine flight – pure, divine decadence. Oh, and our intimate Port Gaverne properties are just a stroll away!
4. Cycle to a Cornish Vineyard
Hire a bike from Padstow or Wadebridge, and cycle the gloriously flat Camel Trail to reach Camel Valley vineyard. Relax on their sun terrace with an award-winning glass of brut, and soak up the lush green scenery before pedalling back along the picturesque trail.
5. Unwind and relax with a couple’s spa day
Visit the award-winning Scarlet Hotel, in Mawgan Porth and spend a day being truly treated with your partner. Think clifftop hot tubs, relaxing massages and crisp champagne – and when you’re staying at Fourburrows, The Scarlet is only a stroll away!
6. Take to the cliff paths and stay in a castle
Head down to Prussia Cove for a coastal walk with impressive scenery and history. With smuggler’s coves, dramatic headlands and even the chance of spotting pods of dolphins out at sea. Walk west along the coast and discover Perranuthnoe, and be certain to book a table at The Victoria Inn for a fireside glass of red wine and fabulous food. Plus, you can do all of this on a circular walk from the breathtaking North Wing of Acton Castle.
7. Visit the end of the world
Take a trip to Land’s End – the furthest westerly point of England. Get a picture with the famous sign, walk out onto the 200ft high granite cliffs and feel the wind straight off the Atlantic Ocean in your hair. Watch birds diving, and on a clear day look out for the Isles of Scilly, far in the distance – the last bit of land between you and North America!
8. Pop the question…
A proposal has got to be somewhere unforgettable… so when in Cornwall, take the opportunity to climb the mountain with a castle perched at the top, St Michael’s Mount, and ask the question. With stunning views looking back to the mainland, there aren’t many places more memorable than this iconic Cornish landmark to get engaged.
