A spacious contemporary holiday home offering versatile accommodation sleeping six guests — looking out through trees across the iconic Helford river, and moments from Helford village along a private lane. Little Wood welcomes one well-behaved dog and has ample parking for four cars.
You will access Little Wood via winding Cornish country lanes and as you approach the house you’ll be greeted by dramatic views of the iconic river. The house is set in a large garden on the beautiful wooded banks of the Helford. It offers relaxed open-plan accommodation, a kitchen that will inspire the chef in you, three welcoming bedrooms, and beautifully fitted modern bathrooms.
The house was built in 1986 to take full advantage of the riverside setting, and has been owned by the same family ever since. They have completely renovated and refitted the house in 2019 with new kitchen, beds, furniture and soft furnishings to create a contemporary holiday haven on the Helford. Little Wood is all laid out on one floor with the living area at one end of the property and the bedrooms and bathrooms at the other. The main garden is to the rear and is south-west facing making it an ideal space for al fresco dining and outdoor living. The front garden faces the river and has mature planting and trees — as well as giving private access to the village on foot in around two minutes. Here you’ll find an excellent waterside gastro pub, village shop and deli — and of course the magical river.
Inside Little Wood
Stepping inside Little Wood and through the entrance hall you are greeted by an open-plan living area, dining space and kitchen. In the living area you have comfortable seating, an open log fire for winter evenings, and a 43 inch smart TV. You have a formal dining area for six, and adjacent to this a beautiful galley-style kitchen with 90cm classic Rangemaster with convection hob as well as an excellent range of appliances, like a Nespresso machine, a 4-slice toaster, and plenty of utensils to bring out the creative chef in you.
The living space connects with the generous conservatory — a bright and pleasant space giving something of a ‘tree-tops’ view of the garden and surrounding area. It has a sofa and easy chairs, making it the perfect space for conversation and family board games. Along the corridor are three comfortable bedrooms. The master bedroom has a king-sized bed and a lovey fully-tiled en suite with a walk-in waterfall shower. The second bedroom is a super king-sized zip-and-link that can be separated into a twin, and the third has a double bed. There is also a beautifully appointed family bathroom — and a cloakroom and separate WC complete the accommodation.
Outside and in the area
In the garden you have outdoor dining for six on the patio, a classic Weber barbeque and sun lounge chairs. The back garden is gated and very private, but please note that it is not totally dog secure as much of its boundary is made up of hedge and shrubs rather than fencing.
Little Wood is ideally positioned for people who want to enjoy the riverside amenities of Helford but who will also value the space and privacy that is afforded by a location set a little back from the heart of the village. The walk into Helford down this private lane takes approximately two minutes at a stroll, and the only traffic you are likely to encounter might be the postman’s van once a day. The lane brings you out just along from the very excellent Shipwright’s Arms — which sits right on the river’s edge almost at the very end of this tidal creek. The village is one of the most picturesque in Cornwall and along with the pub comprises a scattering of pretty cottages, many of which are thatched, a little bridge as well as a ford, and the village shop and deli.
In the wider area there are excellent footbaths and coastal path walks including a ramble round to Frenchman’s Creek and to Kestle Barton with its internationally renowned small art gallery. You can also cross the Helford by foot ferry to the opposite bank (Helford Passage) where there is another great riverside pub (The Ferryboat) and where the coast path continues past the fabulous gardens of Trebah and Glendurgan and along the coast to Falmouth. Within a radius of ten miles you have all of the amazingly diverse Lizard Peninsula, with things to do and places to visit ranging from classic family-friendly or surf beaches, tiny fishing villages, ‘secret’ coves accessible only from the coast path, rare plants and seabirds, astonishing geology, farm shops, and of course mile after mile of some of the most breath-taking coastal walking anywhere in the world.
Things we love about Little Wood
We love the peace and quiet of this location — it’s a hidden away corner of Helford village that you really wouldn’t know was there — and there is a deep pleasure in being able to stroll down your own driveway and emerge right in the hearty of the village. This corner of Cornwall is all about river, creeks and coves. One of our favourite walks anywhere is from the village, up the footpath over fields and along the magical wooded banks of Frenchman’s Creek — then a stop-off at Kestle Barton gallery (open from Easter to end of October) to see what’s on and get a coffee or Roskilly’s ice cream, then back through more fields and woods to Helford. Another joy is eating on the outdoor tables at the Shipwright Arms late at night on a high tide, watching small boats come and go on the little pontoon. Or wandering down to the village, buying morning-fresh Vicky’s sourdough loaf and taking it home for breakfast. Ah the simple pleasures to be had at Little Wood!… the perfect base for a relaxing Helford holiday.
