Porthtowan Beach

If you ask me, there is nothing better than a long Cornish sandy beach stretching for miles that you and your four legged friend can walk along for miles. This is exactly what Porthtowan beach provides you with, but note only at low tide.

At high tide there is a stoney smaller beach, but it doesn’t take long to turn into a flat sandy beach as the tide recedes. If the tide is up you will have just enough time to pop into Blue Bar at the entrance to the beach.

Like a lot of North coast beaches, Porthtowan gives you amazing panoramic views across the horizon, on a clear day you can see Godrevy lighthouse to the west and to the east a typical engine house, open from 1815-1914. The Cornish mining history is still very apparent in this area, Wheal Coates engine house is one of many that you pass on this section of coast path.

If you walk east along the sand, past the dramatic cliffs towering above you, the next beach you reach is Chapelporth. This is National Trust owned and is a beautiful little cove at high tide and an adjoining flat sandy beach at low tide. There is a cafe and toilets in the National Trust car park and this is also where you join the coast path heading back to Porthtowan if the tide is not on your side!

Dogs are allowed on the beach between Easter Day and 1st October.
