This beautiful property has been converted from and an 1890’s artists’ studio. It’s been been lovingly transformed into a hideaway for people who admire natural surroundings and treasure our Cornish scenery. Artist’s retreat is set just off the coast road between Newlyn and Mousehole, at the end of a private drive, giving a feeling of serenity and making this the perfect place to unwind.
Inside Artist’s Retreat
Coming up the drive you will be met by a sea of honeysuckle and roses. The front of the property is a picture, and entering through the front door the interior is calm and relaxing with wooden floors and carefully chosen art and artefacts. Going right takes you into the large open kitchen, dining and living space with windows framing stunning sea views. The space is fully equipped and well laid out, and with a lovely wood burner it’s cosy in the winter. To the left of the front door takes you to the master en suite double bedroom. This lavish room has French doors opening straight out onto the patio area, perfect for those lazy mornings. Other rooms off the hallway include another double bedroom, a twin room and a family bathroom.
Outside and around
A terraced garden to the side and rear of Artist’s Retreat gives even more extensive views across the bay. There are two garden gazebos from which you may spot marine and bird life, even the odd dolphin if you are lucky!
The separate artist’s studio cabin also sits amongst the well established garden on the same level as the house. Whether you feel inspired or just want a little me-time, this is a lovely place to reflect and soak up the surroundings. Equipped with some artist’s materials it is possible you’ll be inspired to be creative and take home your own memories of this special place.
Newlyn itself is unique, and is almost untouched by tourism. The harbour is a short stroll away with pubs, restaurants, an art gallery of international repute, a great cinema and some of the best fish shops in the UK — an ideal way to buy locally and a great excuse for a barbecue. The iconic village of Mousehole is a twenty minute stroll away (or a very short drive), and has numerous cafes, as well as shops and galleries to browse. The coastal path is at the end of the drive, and you can walk as far as Lamorna, Porthcurno, and beyond…
Things we love…
Artist’s Retreat is all on one level and built in an ‘L’ shape, which makes it sociable and homely. You’ll find that although there are many things happening in the form of events and attractions in the area, there is actually no need to go anywhere — the owners have created such a nice place to relax and enjoy that the cottage really has all you need. The veranda and decking evoke the feeling of bringing the outside in, which, together with the sound of breaking waves on the shore below really does make this a gem in Cornwall.
A note on accessibility and safety
Artist’s Retreat is built into a steep hillside. This gives it amazing views, but please be aware that there are steep steps, un-guarded terraces, and two ponds, making the garden unsuitable for small children, for this reason please note that no children four years and under are permitted at this property. All guests use the garden at their own risk. There are five steps up to the front door. The interior is all one one level and there are no steps between the main building, the veranda, patio and artists’ studio.
