Beautiful garden, perfect location!
Julie T — August 2017
This beautiful country cottage is set in a very large and secluded garden, and is perfect for exploring the stunning beach of Praa Sands, miles of coastal path, or foodie Porthleven. Thornleigh Cottage sleeps 8-9 and has been recently renovated to provide all modern comforts.

Deep in hedgerow lanes down a gravel road sits Thornleigh Cottage, a hidden gem and perfect haven to return to after a busy day on the beach. The property cleverly combines heritage and modernity, with beamed ceilings and exposed stone-work together with contemporary furnishings, fittings and appliances. The garden is very large and well kept, with mature planting and a new gazebo, making it a delightful place to relax at any time of year. The close proximity to some of Cornwall’s most attractive and varied coastline as well as two large National Trust estates makes this an ideal holiday base.

Inside Thornleigh Cottage

The décor is relaxing, with natural colours, sisal flooring, decorative cushions and curtains, prints and paintings by a local artist. The downstairs offers a large, sunny and informal living room, with three sofas, LCD TV and DVD player and a library of DVDs and games. Adjacent is the dining room, which can seat up to ten, and the modern and well-equipped kitchen with cream units, slate tiled floor, iroko wood surfaces and large Rangemaster double oven and ceramic hob. There is a Belfast sink, large larder fridge, separate integrated freezer, and dishwasher. Upstairs are four bedrooms plus a family bathroom with spa bath and shower cubicle Mira sport shower, and a separate shower room. Thornleigh Cottage has full central heating, remaining warm and toasty throughout the year.

The Garden

You will have approximately half an acre of garden to enjoy and explore, none of which is overlooked. Being a country cottage garden, it’s a lovely combination of quiet lawns bordered with mature shrubs and flower beds, with sheltered and sunny corners. At the centre is a large gazebo with Lutyens bench  seating up to nine. There is also an open paddock, separated from the cottage garden by a gate (ideal for energetic folk of all ages).

Out and about

Thornleigh Cottage is situated eight miles from the coast of Mount’s Bay, and you have so much choice it’s hard to know where to start… The historic fishing village of Porthleven, with restaurants (Rick Stein, Amelies, Kota and others), cafes and pubs is just 10 minutes away. The same distance away is the mile-long white sandy beach of Praa Sands, and not much further are the villages and beaches of Perranuthanoe and Marazion, and of course St Michael’s Mount. The coastal path along this stretch of coastline is varied and dramatic, and along it you will find the iconic Wheal Prosper mine engine house at Rinsey (used in the filming of Poldark) as well as Prussia Cove (the haunt of real smugglers). At Thornleigh Cottage you will find yourself between not one but two historic National Trust estates, Godolphin and Penrose, both of which offer miles of beautiful country walks (the sweeping views at the top of Godolphin Hill, and the lake-side elegance of Penrose Walks are two of our favourite spots in Cornwall). You are also on the doorstep of the Lizard Peninsula and Helford, and just a 25 minute drive from St Ives or Falmouth.

Things we love

Thornleigh Cottage, like this area of Cornwall, has something for everyone. Cooks will love the well-equipped kitchen and generous dining area, peace-seekers will adore the quiet, relaxing and cosy living room. Children and pets will be able to let off steam in the larger outdoor areas and all will enjoy the sunny and secluded garden. And in the area you are spoilt for choice; you will have some of Cornwall’s best beaches for surf, play or simply hanging out — fascinating Porthleven (the south coast’s answer to Padstow) — heritage in abundance — and miles of inland and coastal pathways to enjoy and explore. We think Thornleigh Cottage takes some beating!
