This little cabin is made just for two. It’s all about having only what you need and nothing more. A comfy bed, a hot tub, a log burner, and a view up the valley. You have the use of extensive shared riverside grounds, a little hidden away garden, and parking. You are in tranquil countryside but moments from Newquay with its beaches and attractions.
Available from July 2021!
Cabin life is simple. A place to leave life’s clutter and complications behind, and focus on what really matters. Tucked away near Newquay in the blissful Cornish countryside is a tiny hamlet by a river. Here you’ll find just the place. Gwills Cabin is set in the grounds of an old farmstead, part of a tiny collection of quirky self-catering holiday retreats. It’s our smallest retreat — truly pocket sized, and we love it! The cabin is set opposite Gwills Cottage which sleeps four, making a great base for an escape with friends.
Inside Gwills Cabin
Following a winding country lane just outside Newquay, you’ll cross a small bridge, and find a small collection of quirky retreats grouped around the large lawned grounds of an old farmhouse. Gwills Cabin nestles on the perimeter. The accommodation comprises of one main room with a large window looking up the valley over an open countryside meadow where ponies, goats or geese are usually grazing. To the front you have French doors looking out over the shared grounds. There’s a creative and eclectic vibe with an oak floor and a rustic wood burner on a raised plinth. You have a king sized double bed, a comfy L-shaped sofa which can be turned into a bed, a large wall-mounted TV and coffee table. Your kitchenette is small but has all you need with two ring induction hob, fridge and butler sink. Off the main room is the bathroom with power shower, sink and WC.
Your garden and the shared areas
Beside Gwills Cabin and tucked away behind rustic screening is your little private garden and hot tub. Surrounded by mature planting, it catches the afternoon sun. The hot tub is raised so you can enjoy the countryside view while you soak and relax. To the front is your area of lawn which faces the afternoon and evening sunlight and has seating for al fresco meals. This space connects to the wider shared grounds at Gwills which extend to an acre of lawns, leading to the river (which is in fact the upper stretch of the River Gannel). You have shared use of a trampoline and rope swing, and have free access to all the space. Jen and Nick, the owners here, live in the old farmhouse on site and have friendly dogs and children, as well as cats, and sometimes goats and alpacas. They will respect your privacy of course, but are usually on hand if you want help, local information, or even a cream tea.
Out and about
You are a five minute drive from Newquay with a different beach every day of the week if you get easily bored. Book a surf lesson, go for a paddle or an open-water swim, or just hang out and relax. Newquay has a growing reputation for restaurants to suit all tastes, whether you want Michelin starred fine dining, or grab-and-go street food. The area also has an array of visitor attractions – again, there is something for everyone. Our guests particularly enjoy the beautiful Elizabethan manor house of Trerice. Sustrans National Route 32 of the National Cycle Network (part of the Cornish Way Cycle Route) passes a few metres up the road, making this a great base for a cycling holiday, plus of course you have countless of miles of coastal path heading east towards Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth or west to Pentire and Holywell Bay.
Right here in the hamlet you may be able to buy breakfast eggs from the neighbour’s hedge — and back across the bridge (but out of sight) is a small holiday park where you can use the on-site shop for basics and use the small bar. On the country lane back to Newquay is one of the area’s best farm shops with brilliant locally grown food and a great little café.
Things we love…
Gwills Cabin offers the antithesis of complicated modern living — an antidote to the stresses and trials of daily life. Wake up to morning mist filtering through the reedy meadow, put the coffee on and plan your day. You know less is more, so we recommend a day on nearby Polly Joke, a beach as nature intended it with nothing but clean sand, lapping waves and jutting headlands. Maybe grab a bite in town and head back to your secluded hot tub for a sundowner. Light the wood burner, snuggle down, watch a movie in bed. If you want frills and gadgets you’ll be happier elsewhere. If you value wellbeing and crave a simpler, slower pace, you’ll love Gwills Cabin.
