Captain’s Rest

A stylish apartment moments from St Ives’s harbour and beaches

Sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms (+ cot) Friday arrival Up to two well behaved dogs welcome
The Retreat

Captain’s Rest is a beautifully presented dog friendly apartment sleeping four. It has excellent views over the harbour and St Ives Bay, and is ideally located in a quiet and elegant street just a short stroll from Porthmeor beach, the Tate and Hepworth galleries, and the town centre with its many restaurants.

Captain’s Rest is a stylish first floor apartment within a few moments’ of the centre of St Ives. The town’s fantastic beaches as well as the boutique shops, restaurants and art galleries are all within easy walking distance. Captain’s Rest has a very light and airy feel offering spectacular sea views over St Ives, towards Carbis Bay and Porth Kidney beach with Gwithian Towans and Godrevy Lighthouse in the far distance. As the name suggests this retreat is a relaxing holiday home with a nautical theme.

This thoroughly contemporary dog friendly apartment is located in a historic building with lovely vintage twists feature throughout. The wooden floors in the main living area add to the refreshing feel. There are just four apartments in the building.

Inside Captain’s Rest

Through the large front door at the front of the property, you’ll have a short walk up one flight of stairs to the apartment. The amazing sea views will greet you as soon as you step into the open plan living area. Flooded with natural light the lounge boasts a large bay window perfect for gazing at the view, and has beautiful furniture and soft furnishings in soft cool blues and greys as well as its original fireplace.

Here you’ll find everything you need for a comfortable family holiday including dedicated wifi and a 50″ smart TV. The open plan kitchen is fully fitted with granite worktops, electric oven, ceramic hob, dishwasher, washer/dryer, fridge/freezer and microwave. There is seating and dining space for four people.

To the rear of the apartment is a good sized double bedroom and a twin bedroom. The family bathroom completes the accommodation, including a shower over the bath and a separate shower too.

Outside and in the area

Captain’s Rest is situated on ‘Carrack Dhu’, a quiet residential road. It has its own dedicated private parking for one car to the rear. The front of the apartment faces south and fully enjoys the summer sunlight. The small terraced garden at the front of the building is a sympathetically planted with exotics and has communal seating where you can to enjoy a sundowner and take in St Ives’ fresh air. It’s just a five minute walk to the surfing beach of Porthmeor, or the sheltered family beaches (Harbour or Porthminster), as well as the Tate gallery and the Barbara Hepworth museum.

It is also very easy to access to the coast path from here, so you can be out of St Ives and enjoying the dramatic and rugged coastline of the Penwith peninsular without needing the car. Zennor, with a great pub, café and historic church is a great destination for an energetic and hugely memorable day’s walk, along one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the UK. For golfers there is an 18 hole par 3 at Tregenna Castle and an 18 hole challenging Links course at Lelant.

Things we love…

Captain’s Rest is modern and well equipped, it will leave you wanting nothing more on your holiday. The owners have thought of lots of details to make it extra special. There is a toy box filled with all sorts of games for all ages and this coastal themed property makes you feel on holiday as soon as you walk through the door. You will not stop discovering little details for your whole stay.

A little bit of history; this building was originally built for a sea captain. You may notice that this is the centre house on the street of Carrack Dhu, and the largest, with its central door and two side windows to either side. The neighbouring houses were built on later, extending both sides down the street for the captain’s crew and other prominent local residents. Now this apartment is owned once more by a modern-day sea-going Captain!

Home from home
Our 6th (we think) time here and we love staying at Captain's Rest — our 'home from home'. Location, views and parking are the best features of Captain's Rest. Hopefully we'll be back for a 7th time.

Viewpoint in St Ives near holiday rentals by Forever Cornwall

A passion for the arts

In addition to its award-winning beaches and top-notch restaurants, St Ives is home to world-renowned cultural attractions, all within striking distance of our St Ives holiday cottages. A visit to the world-renowned Tate St. Ives, overlooking Porthmeor beach, is a must, as is a wander around the Barbara Hepworth museum, which celebrates the life and work of the artist and sculptor who lived in St Ives for the later years of her life.

Take a wander through the Leach Pottery Museum and marvel at the Asian inspired pottery before meandering around the narrow streets, uncovering local artists and their studios. You can even try your own hand at painting by signing up for a lesson with the St Ives School of Painting. A wealth of independent galleries and studios are crammed into the town’s winding tangle of streets, from The New Craftsman, one of St Ives’ most important and influential galleries, to the tiny studios that are crammed around the harbour.

Pristine beaches

From family favourites with epic surf to sheltered, dog friendly coves and white-sand stretches of coast with amazing places to eat, there are six different beaches right in the town — and a further three an easy walk away — making St Ives one of the best places in Cornwall for a seaside holiday, whatever sort of beach you’re after.

With its Blue Flag status and the iconic Tate St Ives as a backdrop, St Ives most popular beach, Porthmeor, has world class surfing — practice your pop-up at the surf school on the beach. Porthminster on the opposite side of the headland is a more sheltered, family-friendly beach, and is home to a brilliant cafe. Porthgwidden is slightly more hidden, tucked away on St Ives’ head. There are plenty of smaller coves dotted around, including Harbour Beach, which have fewer amenities and limited or no lifeguard cover.

A foodie favourite

If you’re a foodie, the St Ives Food & Drink Festival, held every May on Porthminster beach, should definitely be on your calendar. The harbour front is lined with a range of fantastic eateries from award-winning seafood and fine dining to family friendly burgers, fish and chips and traditional Cornish pasties. Where ever you turn you’ll be simply spoilt for choice and don’t overlook the pubs either – The Sloop serves great toasted sandwiches!

For a light bite or a make-your-own picnic, dive into one of the many delis or cafes, all offering outstanding local produce and handmade treats. From vegetarian and Italian to Spanish and Mexican, the variety of cuisine in this little town is exceptional. Take the time to stroll the streets and you’ll soon discover rooftop bars, courtyard restaurants and ice cream parlours serving scoops of the finest locally made ice-cream.  Suffice to say, foodies staying in one of our St Ives holiday rentals will be in food heaven.

Beaches

Porthmeor

One of only nine Cornish beaches to be awarded Blue Flag status, Porthmeor is tiptop for water quality, safety and environmental management. It does attract crowds in the summer, but it also offers sheltered waters, gentle waves and golden sands. Nestled below the iconic Tate St Ives and just a stone’s throw from the centre of town, it’s easy to explore the town from here…visit old pubs or quirky cafes for a spot of lunch, or wander into the Porthmeor Beach Cafe for lunchtime tapas or afternoon cocktails. You’ll also find St Ives Surf School here; they offer surf, paddleboard and kayak lessons and hire, as well as coasteering sessions.

Porthminster

With gorgeous views across to Godrevy Lighthouse, the inspiration for Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse, this award-winning Blue Flag beach has an almost tropical feel, with waving palm trees and clear, calm waters — it’s a firm favourite for swimmers, bucket-and-spade families and deckchair dozers. It’s also next to the train station, so an easy choice for those that have caught the train from St Erth. The brilliant, award-winning Porthminster Beach Cafe, just off the sand, serves up great local food.

Porthgwidden

This beach is slightly smaller and a little hidden from view. Unless you head onto the small section of the coastal footpath that goes around The Island (the St Ives headland), Porthgwidden is tricky to see. But, discover it and you’ll be rewarded with a beach just as sandy and a sea just as turquoise as the other St Ives beaches. Facing east, it’s perfect for those who wish to get to the beach early and bask in the sun all day. It also has a lovely café right on the beach, a row of beach huts, a handy snack kiosk, as well as toilets and parking nearby. Dogs are welcome here from the 30th September through until the Sunday before Easter.

Harbour beach

This beach sits inside the town’s working harbour from which you can often watch local fishermen catching fresh seafood. A natural sun-trap, this soft sandy beach is ideal for swimming and sandcastle building, whilst being in the hustle and bustle of town, with its independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. From here you can join boat trips to spot seals or sail across the bay to the famous Godrevy Lighthouse and Hell’s Mouth.

Food & drink

Bars, restaurants and pubs in St Ives

Just off the beach, the award-winning Porthminster Beach Cafe is a must-visit, combining incredible food (fish comes from the day boats), relaxed vibes and one of St Ives’ most enviable spots. Another beachside eatery worth a visit is Porthminster Kitchen, which has a playful take on Cornish cuisine is packed with global flavours. This new ‘gastrobar’ was launched by local spirit makers. Offering some of the best cocktails in town, tapas-style dishes that are all utterly delicious, and a breathtaking view over the harbour, this place is friendly, chic and by all means a must-visit.

Cafes in St Ives

Grab things for a picnic from The Allotment Deli, from freshly baked bread to award-winning cheeses and locally caught fish. The fabulous Yallah Coffee, roasted in Porthleven, has a cafe hub in the centre of the town.

Seafood in St Ives

It’s hard to find a place in St Ives that doesn’t serve seafood but here are some of our favourites. The friendly Seafood Cafe right in the heart of the town is a friendly spot serving delicious fish and seafood; they also run the Harbour Fish & Chips on the front — order a takeaway to eat on the harbour or grab a table and eat in. Also worth a visit is the Rum and Crab Shack, tucked in a back street behind the harbour, serving small plates and platters to share.

Things to do
Tate St Ives near holiday rental cottages by Forever Cornwall

Art galleries

Whilst names like Tate and Hepworth may attract the crowds, St Ives has over 20 smaller galleries which are perfect for a quiet potter. The New Craftsman Gallery is one of the oldest, supporting Cornish artists through a packed schedule of exhibitions ad workshops throughout the year. Modern art lovers will love Anima Mundi gallery, which brings together international artists from all medias, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, performance and installation. Just off Porthminster beach, the welcoming Portminster Gallery showcases the best of British art, including prints, paintings, sculpture and ceramics from some of the biggest names in modern art.

Delve into the past

The history of St Ives can also be seen in the surrounding area, with UNESCO World Heritage Site, Geevor Tin Mine (and now a museum) demonstrating the importance of the mines in the county. Travel to Porthcurno and you can visit the fascinating Telegraph Museum, and explore its underground tunnels, buried deep within the cliffs to hide the telegraph equipment during WWII. Going further back into the history of West Cornwall, you can visit several Bronze and Stone Age sites, with St Ives’ surrounding area housing the most sites in one area in Western Europe.

This time round, we had our very active four year old, who like us, got involved in bodyboarding, kiting and shopping. And we mustn't forget eating - we loved going to Porthmeor beach cafe (consistently fab and tasty food), eating pasties and ice cream! We'll be back next year with hopes we can get our body boarding technique sorted.

  • A great escape

This is our fourth visit to Captain's Rest. This is a great escape from city life and we first visited as a couple and then with our children. This cosy home has been a tonic and we are already planning our next visit. We spent the whole week exploring St Ives, our days of coastal walks and pints, now replaced with paddling in the shallows, building sand castles and admiring all of the dogs on the beach. I cannot think of anywhere better to spend a damp (with sunny interludes) week. We love you, St Ives.

The Blackburn Family — September 2019

We wish to return to explore more some day.

  • Such a tasteful, comfortable and convenient apartment

We have had a great week; after an initial storm the weather has been just perfect. It's been too nice to exert ourselves beyond pottering around St Ives. We did all the visits last year and the year before so it was time for a rest. We have appreciated the treats left by Suzie, thank you very much! We have also appreciated staying in such a tasteful, comfortable and convenient apartment. Nice to have a parking place too. It's been a lovely week, we're sorry to be heading home. Thank you.

  • Another beautiful stay!

Thank you for another beautiful stay! After seeing in the New Year here in 2017 we couldn't wait to come back for a sunnier June stay! The apartment is absolutely wonderful and we spent many happy moments sitting in the sunny bay window and watching the world go by through binoculars!

  • Fantastic stay at Captain's Rest

We had a fantastic stay at Captain's Rest. We didn't really venture out of St Ives. Only one day we went to Marazion and St Michael's Mount and Land's End. Otherwise, we spent time at the beach (lovely sunny days) and eating at some great cafes and restaurants. Thanks for a great stay at St Ives, and of course Captain's Rest!

  • Home from home

Had a wonderful week in St Ives. Captain's Rest has been the ideal base for re-discovering St Ives for the 'thirty-somethingth' time. A warm, comfortable home from home. We don't want to leave! Porthmeor Beach Cafe is the perfect spot for watching the sunset over a bottle of wine and tapas if you are after a recommendation - book early though as it is popular!

  • Everything we needed for a relaxing family holiday on our doorstep!

Had an amazing week staying in this lovely apartment with the most fantastic sea views. Spent most days in St Ives - Porthminster Beach is our favourite! Had a few trips out...Newquay Zoo, The Lizard, Gunwalloe (great beach!) and Lappa Valley...but with St Ives town just a few minutes walk down the hill, we had everything we needed for a relaxing family holiday on our doorstep! Thank you for all of the lovely things on our arrival - the cream tea went down a treat with a pot of fresh coffee! Sat watching the sun rise over the sea one last time whilst writing this...well until the next time we come back! Thank you!

  • Beautifully decorated with lovely views out to sea

Had the most relaxing time in St Ives and staying at Captain's Rest. Thank you for the fabulous welcome pack and gifts, such a lovely touch. The flat is beautifully decorated with lovely views out to sea. I sat most evenings with a G&T admiring the views. Always looking forward to the warm, comfortable 'Captain's Rest' to return to.

  • A warm welcome and lovely treats!

We came here from Switzerland by car and after a long journey we found this lovely place, Captain's Rest. Thank you so much for the warm welcome and all the lovely treats that accompanied us for the whole week! We loved the Tate, especially the Barbara Hepworth museum. On a sunny day, St Michaels' Mount and a trip to Porthcurno Beach is not to be missed. Our son was happy with the trips to Land's End and Paradise Park. All in all, a wonderful holiday with something for everyone, even for our dog Muffin!

  • We have loved Captain's Rest!

We have loved Captain's Rest - a lovely cottage with clean and beautiful furniture and decor. Thanks very much for the cream tea, fudge, milk and butter - these little touches are very welcoming. The flowers were also gorgeous. When needed you came straight away to sort out extra bedding, thank you. Have walked the cream tea off now with all the hills around the area (there are a lot)! Prussia Cove, Godrevy's Lighthouse and Zennor are all beautiful cliff top walks. Many thanks!

  • Light, clean and spacious with lovely furnishings

We have loved our stay at Captain's Rest. It was our first holiday with our daughter (who is 11 weeks old) and will be one we'll always remember. Beautiful apartment - so light, clean and spacious with lovely furnishings. A real home from home. Views of St Ives are amazing and even with a buggy we haven't found the walk into town difficult, (although the hills have given us a much needed workout!). The kitchen is well equipped and my husband appreciated the clear picture on the TV! Thank you very much!

  • Extremely well equipped

St Ives is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Captain's Rest is the perfect place to stay. Extremely well equipped and maintained. We were very appreciative of the parking space provided.

  • We would thoroughly recommend Captain's Rest

We've had a fantastic stay at Captain's Rest. The view from the bay windows is stunning, made better with the use of the binoculars. Everyday was a photo opportunity. Captain's Rest is a short walk into the centre of St Ives and equally short walk to Porthmeor Beach. We would thoroughly recommend Captain's Rest for any of our friends and family.

  • A comfy nest from which to explore

We've had a most relaxing week at Captain's Rest - loafing about and enjoying all that the flat and St Ives have to offer! Thanks for creating a comfy nest from which to explore. Sitting watching (and throwing ourselves in) the waves at Porthmeor is always a real treat, so to see the bay from the window was an added bonus! A fab week.

  • The location is perfect

We have had a great time staying in Captain's Rest in St Ives. The location is perfect and within walking distance of the town centre. We have visited Zennor, Penzance, Falmouth, Newquay and in particular, enjoyed Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay (both dog friendly). We would love to come back and stay here and hope to do so next year.

  • Beautiful and very relaxing

Captain's Rest is the perfect location, the town has everything that you will need and in walking distance. The beaches are beautiful (not all are dog friendly); Rick Stein's restaurant in Padstow was wonderful and we highly recommend a visit. Thank you very much to Suzie and Jez for the lovely gifts that were left for us on our arrival. The flat is beautiful and very relaxing. Edgar, our pug has had a great time and loved the dog blankets! Thank you, St Ives is a stunning place and we will return and we will stay at Captain's Rest again.
