Tucked away right on the sea’s edge between St Ives’s pretty harbour and beautiful Porthminster beach, the apartment has sweeping sea views. You will look out onto a breathtaking expanse of pure sand at low tide — and be able to watch the clear waters slowly rise until they lap the rocks right below your window. You can’t get closer to the sea than this, without being in it.
Inside Men an Mor Apartment
Men an Mor apartment is set out on two floors below Men an Mor cottage, in a terrace of traditional St Ives houses in a quiet street. The property entirely faces the sea, looking out past the harbour and over St Ives bay. It’s very private and is not overlooked, except by passing seagulls.
The approach is along a balcony and through double patio doors into a light and airy open plan room. The décor is simple, white painted walls and pine floorboards, there are works by local artists and a large window seat is recessed into the granite. Stepping in you will find an open plan living area taking full advantage of the view though the window and patio doors. To the left you will see St Ives harbour and across the bay is Gwithian, and Godrevy lighthouse (Virginia Woolf’s inspiration for ‘To the Lighthouse’. At low tide a vast beach of pure sand will stretch before you. It will be hard not to spend a great deal of time here watching boats and the tide come and go! There is also a large sofa, an upholstered window seat, the dining area positioned to take full advantage of the views through the patio doors, and an LCD TV with Freeview, DVD player and a selection of DVDs and books.
The bedroom with is just off the living area up three steps and divided by a half wall, so that you can sit in bed and watch the sea. The bed is a comfortable pocket sprung double mattress. A spacious bathroom adjoins with a large shower. In the living area is also a double sized fully sprung sofa-bed. Down a spiral staircase is your kitchen area complete with portholes and a breakfast table, as well as a second bathroom with small bath and shower over, again having a porthole with seaviews.
Out and about
Men an Mor apartment is situated on the seaward side of the Warren. Step out of the door, turn left, and walk in moments to the pale golden sands of Porthminster beach and its famous café. Porthminster has a distinctly tropical feel and is an award winning Blue Flag beach, and is sheltered and lifeguarded in season. Turn right and again follow the coast a few short paces to the harbour and town with art galleries, eateries and lots of little shops – as well as more beaches including Porthmeor, which attracts surfers who come for the excellent Atlantic swells. You must visit the Tate St Ives gallery during your stay, and the serene Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden is a favourite of ours — plus there is the Bernard Leach pottery and numerous other independent galleries to choose from.
Only slightly further afield is Carbis Bay and Porthkidney (more perfect sand!). Across the bay the beaches of Gwithian and Godrevy offer three more miles of the sand and dunes, and the delights of historic West Penwith, Zennor, St Michael’s Mount, Porthcurno, the Minack Theatre and Lands End are not much further away. By night the town comes alive with seafood restaurants and open fronted bars. So whether it’s culture, beach-life or browsing you are after St Ives is the perfect place to be. And if you want somewhere really special just for two, we think Men and Mor apartment is hard to beat.
Things we love
Men an Mor has previously been home to both fishermen and artists. The inspirational views create a wonderful and atmospheric place for a holiday in St Ives Cornwall. An apartment like Men an Mor is perfect for a holiday at any time of the year. In the winter stay warm inside whilst watching the waves crash over the rocks below. During fine weather, look out over the azure blue sea or walk the few steps to the golden sands of Porthminster beach. Relax on the window seat and watch the world go by, boats moving in and out of the harbour, the lifeboat launch and wildlife including cormorants and seals, and even dolphins if you are lucky!
