Nestled in the quiet dunes of Upton Towans, Gwithian

Sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms (+cot) Saturday arrival Up to 2 well behaved dogs welcome
The Retreat

Castaway Cottage nestles on the edge of three miles of sand dunes and nature reserve that stretch from Godrevy and Gwithian all the way to Hayle. This stylish retreat offers the perfect escape for surfing and outdoor activity with large secluded gardens and generous laid-back indoor living space, and is also extra dog-friendly.

The property offers a unique alternative to our Gwithian Towans chalets. It’s at Upton Towans, a little further south along the bay and is perfect if you are looking for more space. You will feel as if you have discovered your own special corner of Gwithian, with private access to the sand dunes. A fifteen minute stroll through the dunes leads to the huge beach at Upton Towans, which is lifeguarded May to September and is 100% dog friendly all year and all day long.

This property is a stylish beach house, newly renovated to an exceptional standard and has everything you need for a Cornish getaway – from the smart TV and ensuite master bedroom to the hidden path out onto the golden dunes and beyond to the beach. Whether you will be visiting Castaway Cottage as a group of friends looking to take advantage of the epic Gwithian surf, a family group wanting plenty of space to relax and explore, or simply a couple desperate to tire out the dogs, watch the waves and switch off for a while, this retreat is a coastal haven.

You will discover Castaway Cottage at the end of a shared private road, a three minute drive from Hayle. There is no passing traffic and once you have pulled into your private parking spaces, a sense of unbridled privacy descends. The space that this whitewashed bungalow benefits its guests is immediately obvious, with a small, enclosed front lawn and the large back garden complete with al-fresco dining area and backed by woodland.

Inside Castaway Cottage

Enter into a light and airy hallway, with two super-king-size bedrooms to your left and right. Both are zip-and-link beds and can be converted into twins. The first boasts cool neutral furnishings, windows almost stretching from floor to ceiling and plenty of storage. The next has been impressively styled with tasteful Cream of Cornwall touches and with a handcrafted headboard retaining the beachside feel. Again, natural light and plenty of built in storage makes this room feel light and spacious – perfect for waking up and feeling utterly relaxed. The next bedroom is cosier, perfect for kids with two narrower single beds that can be linked together to make a king-sized double.

The ground floor also has a family bathroom, with a generously sized shower – perfect for washing salty hair and soothing tired arms after a day of surfing!

Enter into the open plan kitchen and dining space which is bright and airy thanks to the large window looking out to the garden, and has a modern yet rustic feel. It is equipped with everything to make life as relaxed as possible for a large group, complete with washing machine, tumble drier, dishwasher and large fridge freezer. Enjoy coffee at the breakfast bar, or wander to the conservatory to bask in afternoon sunlight. Here there is also a large utility and storage space for welly boots, flip flops and dog treats – which can also be corralled with a dog-proof gate to give four-legged friends an area to themselves if needed.

Around the corner from the kitchen is a large sitting room with full height window — with plush sofas and stylish deep blue walls, this is the cosiest room in the house. Snuggle up and log in to your Netflix account on the large smart TV, or enjoy evenings spent playing board games with a glass of wine.

Head up the stairs to the master penthouse bedroom. Complete with luxurious ensuite, this snug room has a superking double bed (the only one in the house that cannot be made into a twin), a walk-in closet and unbridled privacy. With a wide window overlooking the garden and woodland, marble countertops and a double sink and mirror set up, the bathroom is a haven for relaxation. Enjoy a bath with a view, or spend time rejuvenating in the large shower – either way, this master suite offers its guests a little extravagance.

Out and about

The large landscaped garden is accessed either via the side of the house or through the conservatory. Fully dog secure, there is plenty of space for four-legged friends to explore – but there is also a lot of space for family kickabouts and garden picnics! If dining al fresco is on the agenda, the owners of this property have cleverly identified the best sun trap that sits just to the side of the conservatory and have made a gravelled area, complete with large picnic table and barbecue. And the cherry on the top, an après-surf shower to rinse off all the salt and sand after a long session in the waves.

At the side of the garden, you will be sure to notice a garden gate – this will take you to a path leading into the small woodland behind Castaway Cottage. Follow this path to discover the most convenient dog walk, a carpet of bluebells in springtime and a virtually private access pathway onto the dunes that back the beach and give this area, Upton Towans, its name.

The Upton Towans area is a much more discreet section of the coastline in comparison to Gwithian. For those after a little more privacy, even in peak summer months, this area is perfect. The waters aren’t as busy but the surf is still great when swells are rolling, and you’ll have no trouble finding an area of sand to call your own for the day. This part of the beach has the added bonus of being dog-friendly all year round, so if you do fancy a beach walk with the pup during the summer then you can.

Whilst Upton Towans is quiet enough to benefit from less footfall from beachgoers, the cafes of Gwithian are still only half an hour away on foot with the restaurants of Hayle five minutes in the car, or all that St Ives has to offer just 20 minutes away. Farm shops like Richard’s and Trevaskis are great places to get local produce without travelling far, and supermarkets are all nearby too.

Things we love

At its heart, this is a characterful retreat that is the perfect place to enjoy the surf and coastline – as a group of friends or a family. With privacy making Castaway Cottage feel a world away, you can enjoy the beauty of the area from a quiet location.

The interiors have been professionally styled by an interior designer, and it shows. Everything has been furnished to the highest standards, from designer prints to the more practical side of things – sockets with built-in USB ports. At every turn the owners’ thought as frequent holiday home users is evident – nothing has been overlooked in Castaway Cottage.

With only the penthouse suite on the first floor, we think that Castaway Cottage is ideal for multigenerational groups or families visiting – the family bathroom shower has only an inch or two step into it so is perfect for anyone who has slight mobility difficulties. The dog-friendly aspect of the property is great too – the owners were fed up of visiting ‘dog-friendly’ properties that didn’t have anywhere to put dogs at night so have made sure that Castaway Cottage is dog-friendly – and owner-friendly too!

Location

GWITHIAN

Castaway Cottage is in Upton Towans, nestled behind the sand dunes that give this spot its name. Upton Towans is just to the south-west of Gwithian Towans, which is still in walking distance. Walk over the dunes of Upton Towans to find an expanse of golden sands and rolling waves – when the tide is out this dog-friendly beach joins up with Gwithian beach amongst others to form a huge three-mile stretch of sand along St Ives Bay. Upton Towans beach tends to be much quieter both in and out of the water, and is the perfect place for surfers, dog walkers or sunbathers.

Travel times

  • Castaway Cottage is about 5 miles from the nearest mainline station at Camborne. Regular and convenient services run from all over the UK.
  • Castaway Cottage is situated in Upton Towans, near Gwithian on Cornwall’s north coast, just five minutes north east of Hayle on the B3301. Driving time from London is around five hours in normal traffic, Exeter is around two hours away. We’ll send you detailed route information before your departure.

Things we love

  • The sand dunes leading to the beach are quite literally on your doorstep in this unique location. The little woodland area at the back of the cottage is a great feature too.
  • Upton Towans offers its guests real privacy, and with Castaway Cottage's private drive and garden at the end of a private lane, you won't feel overlooked at all.
  • The garden at Castaway Cottage is a paradise for kids, dogs and adults after a sun trap! Such a big garden is often compromised with beach houses - not here.
  • Although you feel miles from anywhere once you step through the door at Castaway Cottage, supermarkets, farm shops and restaurants are all less than ten minutes away.

The gwithian guide

Surfers

Water-sports Wonderland

With its rolling waves, golden sands and stunning sunsets, Gwithian and the surrounding beaches are a watersports lover’s paradise, a stone’s throw from our Gwithian Towans holiday cottages. Seasonal lifeguards serve the beach here, so it’s a safe place for those wanting to get in the water and discover what St Ives Bay has to offer in terms of aquatic adrenaline. Take advantage of Gwithian’s decent swell and jump on a surfboard with the help from our friends at Global Boarders. When the wind whips up, you can join the kitesurfers soaring over the waves.

If you’d rather just get in the water without a board, the sea swimming is simply spectacular. Time it right and you can be out in a calm sea, watching the sun sink below the Atlantic. Or, get up with the larks to have the beach to yourself on a summer morning before even the sand has warmed up. With plenty of shallow waters and rock pools to explore it’s also the perfect place to bring the kids with a bat and ball for some simple family holiday fun.

Safe, sheltered sand pools

Our Gwithian Towans chalets and cottages make an ideal base for families. As the tide retreats back across Gwithian’s golden sands, it reveals a myriad of rock pools and sand pools that heat up under the summer sun, creating safe, warm shallows that are perfect for kids to play in. Gwithian has seasonal lifeguards too, so children can try their hand sea swimming and bodyboarding worry free. For those with a four-legged friend in tow, make for the south-westerly section of Gwithian and the beaches beyond, where dogs are free to frolic, cooling off in the many sand pools along the way.

The vast expanse of beach exposed at low tide serves as a fantastic pitch for beach games, whether it’s rounders, cricket or football. Gathering up a group of friends or family for a match is an idyllic way to spend an evening. For post-game refreshments, head up into the Towans, fire up a barbecue and watch as the sun sinks down behind the Atlantic.

Cornish walking holidays Gwithian South West Coast Path

Miles of coastal footpath

With cliff walks to the east and gentle strolls through the dog friendly dunes to the west, Gwithian has direct access to fantastic walking. Head east along Gwithian beach and you’ll discover the steep cliffs at Godrevy Head, a stark contrast to the gentle slope down to sea level found at Gwithian. Peer carefully over the edge to Mutton’s Cove to count the seals lounging on the beach below, or continue further along the cliff for stunning views of the dramatic north Cornish coastline.

These north cliffs also join up with one of Cornwall’s richest woodland areas, Tehidy Woods. Home to friendly squirrels and a great cafe, these paths provide cooler shady walking during the summer months and sheltered strolls in the winter. Walk west from Gwithian and you’ll be greeted with beach, beach and more beach, stretching all the way to St Ives. With gentle sandy tracks, quiet lanes and almost continuous views across St Ives Bay, this gentle section of the coastal footpath is dog friendly all year round.

Beaches
Gwithian beach dunes, Cornwall

Gwithian

Backed by sand dunes, with a gentle golden slope leading down to clear waters, Gwithian’s lifeguarded shores are perfect for beach life. When the wind blows, watch surfers take on the Atlantic waves and kite surfers take to the air, with seasonal lifeguards looking on. If you want to test the waves yourself, you’ll find board hire and lessons, as well as kayaking, paddleboarding and coasteering, at Global Boarders, just behind the dunes. On a calm day, the waters are dotted with swimmers, families playing beach games and kids finding their feet with bodyboards.

Godrevy lighthouse, Gwithian beach, Cornwall

Godrevy

With its rocky outcrops, great surf and sheltered shores perfect for sunbathers, Godrevy is the beach for those looking to find their own secluded spot of sand. Godrevy is under the watchful eye of seasonal lifeguards, so children can play happily in the sea, or explore the many rockpools and sandpools. Godrevy beach and the grassy cliff above looks out towards Godrevy Lighthouse, the inspiration behind Virginia Woolfe’s To The Lighthouse. It’s one of our favourite spots to watch the sun set, turning the sky a deep red as the sun slips down behind the lighthouse. The Godrevy Beach Cafe in the National Trust carpark is great.

Gwithian Beach and dunes, St Ives Bay, Cornwall

Hayle’s beaches

Gwithian is flanked to the east by a number of beaches that make up the three miles of sand that stretches across St Ives Bay to Hayle Estuary. Upton Towans, Mexico Towans and Hayle Beach are all dog friendly all year round, and they all interconnect as the tide goes out. The grassy dunes behind them are a perfect spot for a barbecue and there are caves to discover at low tide, just a stone’s throw from our Gwithian Towans chalets. From wartime structures to pillars used to facilitate the extraction of tin from the sand over a hundred years ago, there’s plenty to see for those who don’t fancy lounging in the sun all day.

Food & drink
Sunset Surf cafe at Gwithian beach, Cornwall

Cool cafes

Right on Gwithian’s sand, the quirky Hungry Horsebox Co is housed in a converted horsebox. They do a delicious dhal and great coffee. Set just back from the beach, Sunset Surf Cafe overlooks the beautiful beach and is a great spot for some hearty homemade food and a crisp glass of local cider. It’s also home to the surf school Global Boarders. With its showstopping views, The Jam Pot is an idyllic location for a tea or coffee stop, a mouthwatering bacon sandwich or a generous helping of cake. At the other end of the beach, the kid friendly, dog friendly and surfer friendly Godrevy Beach Cafe serves everything you’d want after a blustery beach walk or surf, from delicious breakfasts to indulgent hot chocolates. Grab a table upstairs for a brilliant view of Godrevy lighthouse.

Pubs and restaurants

A couple of miles up the road, Trevaskis Farm Restaurant is a great place for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Their seasonal lunch and supper menus include dishes such as crusted sea bream and lobster thermidor, and their Sunday roasts are very popular. In the centre of Gwithian, the Red River Inn is open every day for breakfast, lunch and evening meals, with plenty of local produce and Cornish ales on offer. It holds a popular annual beer festival at Easter. Behind the dunes at the far end of Gwithian beach, the Rookpool is full of sandy footed surfers and  serves small bites and sharing plates, hearty main meals, such as sea platters and seafood chowders, burgers and ribs.

Eating local in Gwithian and Hayle

With two brilliant farm shops within a couple of miles of the village and delis, ice cream parlours and pasty shops in neighbouring Hayle, it’s easy to get your hands on local produce in Gwithian, from fresh fish and meat to veg and local cheeses.

Things to do
Surfing at Gwithian Beach, Cornwall

Take to the water

Gwithian is one of the most popular surfing spots on the north coast, and for good reason — it regularly welcomes medium sized clean surf to its shores, so it’s brilliant for all abilities. There are numerous surf schools around Gwithian and Godrevy, including Global Boarders, which is located at the Sunset Surf cafe near the Gwithian Towans carpark. They cater to all ages and abilities, and they also offer coasteering, kayaking and paddleboard hire and lessons, too.

Red Panda At Paradise Park, St Ives Bay, Cornwall

Paradise Park

With over a hundred species of birds, this brilliant wildlife park in Hayle is home to eagles, parrots and flamingoes, as well as Red Pandas, otters, and a petting zoo. Paradise Park caters for all ages too, with penguin feeding, a jungle train, free flying shows and the chance to hold a barn owl, make sure you check out their website to find out when these events are on. If the kids still aren’t tired out, make sure you take them to the Jungle Barn, Paradise Park’s whopping soft play area. A thoroughly entertaining way to spend a day!

Seals Mutton Cove Gwithian, Godrevy

Seal spotting

All year round, if you head across Godrevy Point to Mutton Cove and peer carefully over the cliff edge, you should be able to spot the herd of seals taking shelter on the beach down below. Watch them head out to sea and swim, their heads bobbing in the waves like little black buoys, or see fluffy grey pups lollop across the sand. If you’re lucky enough, you may be able to spot them in the water off Godrevy and Gwithian beaches, or take a boat trip with St Ives Boat Company and spot them lounging on the lighthouse island.

  • Perfect

Such a wonderful house — we had the most amazing stay. We were so lucky to have the beach to ourselves in the most glorious weather. This location is very special indeed. The house too was perfect. The dreamy soft beds, the fab decor and a kitchen stocked with every utensil, even allowing us to make pancakes for our little one's third birthday. We would love to come back!

  • No doubt we will be returning

Thank you for such a lovely stay. Your holiday home is so relaxing and so well thought out, all the little details are brilliant. Our dogs (Ted & Rog) loved the freedom in the garden (well fenced), and were shattered from running through the dunes and on the beach. Castaway Cottage is now firmly our favourite stay in Cornwall and no doubt we will be returning.

  • We truly enjoyed the comfort if it all

Thank you, we had a lovely stay at this beautiful home. We truly enjoyed the comfort of it all. The BBQ, hammock, lounge chairs — it was all there to enjoy the sunny days in the garden. Our kids enjoyed the water and waves with their boards and all of us enjoyed the walks through the dunes. We came all the way from Holland and to us this coastline and the dunes are just wonderful. We hope that we can come and visit again in the future!

  • Fabulous cottage

Our family have been visiting this part of Cornwall for over 25 years and it is our absolute favourite place to be. We have loved staying in your fabulous cottage and having our family all together. We felt very welcome — your cottage is clean, comfortable, well-equipped and very stylish and it's a great location being able to walk across the dunes. It was also ideal for our two golden retrievers who have had a wonderful week away — it's lovely to find somewhere who accommodates dogs too! Thank you for the welcome gifts — especially the dog treats. We have had a great time and would love to come back.

All in all, a great break in a great house.

  • We'll be back without a doubt

One of the very best houses we have stayed in around the Towans. A wonderfully well-equipped house with excellent attention to detail. The gate to the dunes & sea was brilliant. Kate & Jan were excellent hosts and we'll be back without a doubt.

    Nick & Teresa — May 2021
  • Would love to come again

This must be the best (of many) self-catering cottages in which we have stayed. Absolutely wonderful with everything we could have asked for. The log fire was a bonus given the mediocre weather (extra logs from the farm shop). Due to the combination of weather & Covid-19 restrictions, we ate most meals in & thoroughly enjoyed them - washed down with some local brews & thoughtfully left wine. And then to bed in delightfully comfortable beds with luxury bedding and giant towels (what luxury). Would love to come again.

    Peggy, Brian & David — May 2021
  • A fantastic stay

A fantastic stay in your wonderful house. Everything we needed is provided. Loved the walk in the dunes and lounging in the garden. A great location to explore, with good amenities. My dog had a ball. We'll be back.

  • Lovely comfortable house by the sea

What a treat after lockdown to enjoy beautiful Cornwall and stay in this lovely comfortable house by the sea. It couldn't have been better; the sun shone, the pubs were open, and even went to the Old Forge and Gurnards Head for lovely food. We can't wait to come back!

  • Very homely

Very homely, well decorated and well-supplied house. Loved the layout of the house and position close to the beach. The outdoor shower was a real luxury and great for washing all surfing gear plus open-air showering. The dog loved the dunes and special walks to the beach. Also great to have lots of space on the beach with no crowds, even in August! Didn't get to try much of the local restaurants/towns etc due to Covid, but it didn't matter. Rockpool & Sunset cafes both good, as was Trevaskis farm. Thank you!

  • LOVED this house!

LOVED your house, so homely and welcoming! We've had such a lovely stay, lovely long walks across the dunes to the beach just at the back of the house and it was a great base to explore the area; everything is on the doorstep! The welcome pack was very well received and the beds are really comfy! My son loved playing in the large garden too. We wil miss cosy nights in on the 'cloud' sofa by the log-burner! We Will be back! • Perfect to a 'T'

Everything about this property is perfect to a 'T', it is an oasis of calm which was made just for us! The decor, the lighting, even your bunch of flowers has held me captive and let my mind think for hours and hours. The walk to the majestic beach, through the wonderful dunes, the crashing waves and miles of sands have inspired many a tune. So now I leave, my guitar all packed and head on back to my little home, where I will look and think back on this beautiful place that I have roamed. Thank you, I will be back.

  • One of the most comfortable and well thought out houses we have stayed in

A lovely fortnight spent here and the weather was kind to us. A very beautiful house and the dogs loved the treats and water bowl. Our granddaughter loved the woods out the back, at 18 months old it was so exciting! We also spent a lot of time on the beach. We have been coming to Cornwall for 22 years and this is one of the most comfortable and well thought out houses we have stayed in — well done! Thank you very much.

  • Absolutely love the cottage

We are leaving with a heavy heart, absolutely love the cottage and the area. The property is so conveniently located for exploring the South, West and North coast of Cornwall. With everything less than an hours drive away. Gwithian Towans is, and always will be, our favourite beach and we spent lots of time in the sea, walking the dogs, BBQ'ing and watching beautiful sunsets. We were blessed with beautiful weather, thanking the weather gods! Thank you Kate and Jan for your amazing hospitality! We will be back for sure.

The Abeyratne family — August 2019
  • Contemporary cottage!

Upon our arrival we spotted the contemporary styling of the cottage and how green and luscious the garden was. The abundance of space allowed us to play the sports that we love! The back gates into the woods offered the perfect escape and on our first evening walk we saw the most breath-taking sunset. We visited Gwithian beach many times due to the convenient location and we had perfect weather! The Guest directory recommendations were spot on and we enjoyed many pasties. We have loved staying at your cottage and had a fantastic experience due to your hospitality. We hope to return ASAP!

  • Loved everything about Castaway

What a privilege to be your first guests in your lovely home — we have loved everything about it. From the peaceful and private location to the open plan family oriented design and contemporary decor. You have thought of everything we could ever wish for! A perfect, restful, fun holiday with our extended family. Thank you for the thoughtfulness of your welcome gifts and useful stock upon arrival. Our daily walks through the garden with Hattie (our dog) into the woodlands and onto the dunes and beach will be our lasting and slightly envious memory of your gorgeous Castaway Cottage.
