With the Easter holidays just around the corner, we thought we’d round up some of the exciting things for kids to do in the Duchy over the next couple of weeks. From egg hunts and trails, to theatre, museums and art workshops, here’s our guide to the top things to do this Easter in Cornwall.
Easter trail at Trerice House and Gardens, Nr Newquay
Nowhere does trails and treasure hunts quite like the National Trust, and Trerice House and Gardens near Newquay is no exception. This Easter, children will be able to wander the trail around the grounds of this grand Elizabethan house and discover nature-inspired activities to do along the way — and be treated to a chocolate egg at the end. The beautiful gardens include a yew garden inspired by grand Elizabethan ceilings, meadows where wildlife thrives, and orchards with dozens of different apple trees.
Easter at Eden
Celebrate the joys of spring this Easter at the Eden Project, where families can discover how to grow and eat their way to a healthier planet. Hunt for bugs that help to keep crops in tip-top condition, try your hand at getting pollen to its destination with the help of a giant slingshot and try to guess the crop in a giant guessing game. There are stamps for every activity that children complete and a tasty treat or two to collect at the end.
Pirate Academy at the National Maritime Museum, Falmouth
As part of their new major exhibition on pirates, the National Maritime Museum in south Cornwall’s creative capital will be teaching youngsters everything there is to know about being a pirate of the high seas. There are two different shows each day covering all the essentials: a crash course in pirate skills where children will learn the rules of the pirate code, the food and drink they might have eaten and the weapons they used. They’ll then need to put all this newly acquired knowledge to the test and help their new crew decide the best course of action.
Penguin Eggstravaganza at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary
The Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek will be putting on a number of penguin-themed events to keep the family entertained over the holidays, such as mystery egg trails where children will need to search high and low to uncover hidden letters and unscramble them to reveal name of one of the sanctuaries very special penguins. There will also be a daily story time with Lily, the much-loved sanctuary mascot!
Easter Adventure Quest at Pendennis Castle
At the mouth of the River Fal, the magnificent Pendennis Castle will be putting on an adventure quest where children will be able to explore the grounds to hunt for clues around the site or discover traditional Easter games. If they manage to find all the eggs they’ll be rewarded with an adventurer’s certificate and a tasty chocolate treat!
Family fun at Lappa Valley Steam Railway
Cornwall’s favourite heritage steam railway will be hosting lots of of fun, family-friendly things to do — take part in the annual Lappa Valley Duck Race on the boating lake and follow an Easter trail for a chance to win a chocolate egg.
The Wild Escape at the Tate St Ives
Get creative at the Tate St Ives with this UK-wide project, which brings together hundreds of museums and artists across the UK to explore animals and creatures in museum collections — from art to sculpture to textiles — and asks children to create an artwork on their chosen creature. All the creations will be brought together in a huge collective work of art, unveiled on Earth Day on the 22nd April.
