Winter is no doubt a unique time to visit Cornwall. Come for the cosy Cornish pubs, the stormy seas, blustery coastal walking and cosy Cornish retreats. And you can do all this without the summer crowds! To inspire your next visit to the Duchy, here are our top things to do this winter. You won’t be disappointed!
Storm watching
The peninsula of Cornwall perches perilously on the edge of the Atlantic ocean, so it’s not surprising why this has some of the best spots in the country for storm-watching. There are lots of good places to watch the writhing sea from a safe distance. One famous place being Porthleven on the south coast with its harbour walls exposed to the elements. Be careful when storm-hunting and never get close to danger!
Why not stay in the Lizard or the Helford, which is only a short drive away?
Get your skates on!
To get really in the mood this winter, why not head to The Eden Project where their ice skating rink is back! Running from 29 November 2020 to 21 February 2021, there isn’t a better place to slide across the ice. Once you’re done, you can visit the iconic “biome” greenhouses and warm up among the tropical plants!
Cornish pubs
After braving the blustery wild winter weather, there isn’t a better place to escape to than a cosy Cornish pub, mulled wine in hand and hopefully next to a roaring fire! Here are some of our favourites:
- The Cadhwith Cove Inn, The Lizard
- The Tinner’s Arms, Zennor
- The Port Gaverne Hotel, Port Gaverne
- The Shipwrights Arms, the Helford
Coastal Walking
The South West Coast Path snakes all the way around Cornwall for 300 miles, so you have lots to explore! You’ll be surprised by the variety of coastline on offer, whether it’s the shelters bays on the south coast or titanic weathered cliffs of the north. Wherever you go, you’ll of course find countless gorgeous sandy beaches.
Cornish cottages
…how could we forget all the Cornish cottages you can escape to once you’re done battling the elements outside? Once again, the humble wood burner is a warm welcome when curling up with a good book or catching up on your favourite shows on TV.
