Situated on the North Cornish coast with idyllic sea views, West Haven is a gorgeous and spacious house, right at the heart of the community. It’s easy to feel at home here — from the open plan modern kitchen to the spacious, sunny garden or the fantastic games room — there’s plenty to keep all members of the family entertained. This Widemouth Bay coastal house oozes historical charm, and is one of the original three houses in the bay. And the best thing — it’s only a couple minute’s walk to the beach…
West Haven’s interiors are light and airy with beautiful wooden flooring throughout providing a rustic, homely feel from the moment you set foot through the front door. Acquired by the current owners in 2022, it has been significantly updated whilst retaining its original features and style. Most notably, the kitchen and dining space renovation has resulted in a fabulous open plan area with kitchen island and breakfast bar, making it the perfect social hub for family and friend gatherings. Keen cooks can relish in the superbly equipped kitchen – all whilst enjoying the serene view of the Atlantic Ocean. The large sitting room offers ample light and space for relaxing, with a feature fireplace which has a cosy wood burner for those cooler winter evenings. Enjoy board games or movie night here after a day spent adventuring on the coast.
This Widemouth Bay coastal house offers flexible sleeping arrangements with three downstairs bedrooms. When booking this property as a six sleeper, the upstairs bedrooms will be closed off. The spacious master is located towards the end of the hallway offering a super king ensuite, with peaceful views overlooking the side lawn and sea. The ensuite features a large walk-in rainfall shower and separate bathtub — perfect for enjoying a long soak after a day spent surfing or body boarding. Along the hall, you’ll find a king room which has gorgeous wooden bunk beds, as well as an ensuite with walk in shower. The third bedroom on this floor is set up as a twin and benefits from patio doors that lead directly out onto the terrace, inviting in an abundance of light and salty sea air. The twin room is opposite the downstairs bathroom (which has a walk in shower), meaning there is a bathroom per bedroom in the house.
West Haven is designed for all needs and with all members of the family in mind – you’ll find a dedicated games room with sea views at the front of the house, containing table football and a snooker table for hours of entertainment. Towards the back of the house, there is a generously sized and newly refurbished utility room which leads onto the beach wet room. The beach wet room is fantastically well-equipped and has its own separate, convenient entrance for when coming straight in off the beach. Here you’ll find a large walk in shower, separate WC and a hose for washing off sand and muddy paws. Just outside the wet room is a handy storage shed for beach gear as well — the owners have really thought of everything.
On arrival at this Widemouth Bay coastal house, you’re greeted with a large private driveway with parking for several cars. The large, terraced lawns provide ample space for relaxing and are a firm favourite for furry friends to run around too! The sizeable and sheltered bottom lawn has its origins as being the original lawn tennis court in Widemouth Bay. Enjoy dining al fresco on the patio and make use of the beautiful bifold doors from the kitchen which lead straight out onto the terrace for that easy indoor-outdoor living. The house’s elevated position means you can take in the full beauty of the cliffs, sea and farmland views.
You’ll find Widemouth Bay a little off the beaten track, three miles down the road from the hustle and bustle of the seaside town of Bude. This small, friendly community has a well-stocked local shop and café for all the essentials so you need not stray far. With the beach on the doorstep, it’s so easy to simply leave the car parked up all week and enjoy action packed or lazy beach days. For budding surfers check out the Widemouth Bay Surfing Co for lessons and hire and for those that prefer their feet on the ground, the South West Coast Path beckons in both directions. The delights of North Cornwall can all be easily accessed from Widemouth Bay, including the likes of historical Tintagel Castle or the picturesque village of Boscastle.
Things we love
West Haven is rich with history, having been constructed on land owned by the Squire of Whitstone, who built the house in 1924 to be his summer lodgings. The extensive interior coving, architraves, high ceilings and detailed arches reflect the grandiose requirements of the local ‘Gentleman’, and can still be seen today. One of the best things about West Haven is its enviable position perched by the beach, enjoying unspoilt and sweeping sea views. The home is orientated to take advantage of the full arc of the sun from its rise in the east, to its setting in the west across the Atlantic. There’s a foot path directly opposite the house, meaning the beach can be reached in only a couple of minutes and the beach wet room makes the post sand clean up a breeze. This Widemouth Bay coastal house is perfect for families of all ages and dog-friendly. Once the day is done, retire back to the homely comforts of West Haven, where you can whip up a fabulous feast in the stylish kitchen or enjoy a barbecue on the terrace with a cold glass in hand, soaking up the sights of a beautiful Cornish sunset.
