A show-stopping beach house beside miles of glorious beach

Sleeps 8-10 in 5 bedrooms Friday arrival Up to two well behaved dogs welcome
The Retreat

Created for easy going surf-style holidays, Surf Six is an epic dog friendly beach house with gorgeous sea views that can sleep eight to ten. It has five bedrooms, a large open-plan living, kitchen and diner as well as expansive garden area and private gated parking. The sandy beaches of Gwithian and Godrevy are right on the doorstep, with enticing surf, large rockpools and miles of sand – and with coastal walks and cool cafés to hand as well, Surf Six makes the perfect show-stopping retreat.

Surf Six provides a unique experience for this area and you will be blown away by the chalet’s coastal chic. The indoor and outdoor features are geared to ensure you take advantage of its amazing location, a place of sunsets, surf and sea. The range of bedrooms, bathrooms and living spaces also means the home offers very flexible accommodation for your family or group.

Inside Surf Six

Approaching via a road through the san dunes you arrive at Surf Six, located near the legendary Sunset Surf Café. It’s one of a cluster of privately owned and unique beach houses in this location, ranging from traditional ‘chalets’ to stylish beach-side residences. You have wide double gates and a large parking area behind the property. You’ll enter Surf Six into a nice spacious hallway with storage space for all your hats, coats and boots plus seating. Beyond this is the open plan living/kitchen/dining area, decorated with cool coastal art and hanging industrial lighting. This is the sociable hub for your group to spend time together. There are sea glimpses through two pairs of French doors, which also bathes the room in light at all times of the year. You’ll find a large L-shaped sofa, plus a 40” TV and a Sonos system for your favourite sounds. The kitchen has handmade units and the dining area is generously spacious for shared meals together. Upstairs is an additional living with 180° views of the sea (and Godrevy Lighthouse), a toasty wood burner and lots of seating; two sofas plus large floor cushions and a large revolving armchair. Here there is also a vintage games console with scores of retro delights for you to enjoy including Pac-Man, Space Invaders and many more.

The sleeping accommodation and bathrooms are clustered at each end of the property, separated by the living area. This arrangement may be particularly suitable for two families sharing. At one end you have the stunning principal bedroom with a double bed, luxurious open en-suite wet-room with a decadent in-room bath, spacious walk-in shower , and a connecting WC. At this end of the property is also the second double room, plus a bathroom with shower and toilet. Next to the principal bedroom is the après surf room for rinsing off after time in the sea, with a monsoon shower, another freestanding bath and outdoor access through French doors.

At the other end of the property, beyond the living area, you’ll find further bedrooms for up to six more guests, with a double bedroom and two single rooms each with a trundle bed so that these rooms can be made to sleep two. There is also a lovely fully tiled family bathroom, with a bath and shower.

The garden and surrounding areas

Surf Six is fully detached and stands in its own private garden, which is large and surrounds the beach house on all sides. To the front you have a lawn, and spacious decking area with festival lighting and a dining table for all to enjoy tasty al fresco evenings. For a relaxed surfer vibe, you also have a barbecue and laid-back seating area for nine people. To the back of the home you have a table tennis table for the competitive people in your group, and two après-surf showers. There is also ample parking for three or more cars.

The beach is around 100m from your gate. On the way you’ll pass Sunset Surf, a great place for a coffee, a snack or a complete meal — as well as doubling up as a well-stocked surf shop. If you wanted to try your hands and feet at surfing, the experts at Global Boarders will show you the way of the waves. Gwithian beach is stunning, and it forms one end of three miles of clean tide-washed sand stretching all the way to the Hayle Estuary. Across the bay the sun will set over the twinkling lights of St Ives and Carbis Bay. Gwithian beach is lifeguarded in summer and offers everything beach lovers could wish for, from pumping surf to baby-friendly rockpools. The miles of marram-covered sand dunes (the “Towans”) are dog friendly at all times and the South West Coast Path runs for as far as your legs will carry you in either direction.

Things we love

Surf Six is a well-loved family home that has been styled and appointed for an epic beach holiday, so there’s plenty to love about it. Gwithian is a place you will instantly fall for, a beautifully rural location that’s well connected to stunning places like St Ives, Mount’s Bay and even the wilds of west Cornwall. If you don’t feel like traveling far, you have plenty to do on your doorstep whatever the weather; including relaxing on three miles of sandy beach, playing in the epic surf, wandering the endless dune-scape or rambling the nearby rugged coastline. We also know that big groups like to do different things, so you will find Gwithian has everything suit all moods and ages.

And not forgetting the stellar Surf Six itself. After busy days out, you will find the beach chalet a welcoming space to wind down in. The range of inside and outdoor spaces allows your group to spend time together, whilst providing lots of quiet corners for some guests to get some well-deserved “me time”. The retreat has also been geared to those searching for salt and sand, so you will get full use of the two outdoor surf showers and the huge pre/post surf room. With coastal and surf vibes aplenty, Surf Six was made for full-tilt relaxation where the worries of the world will wash away with the tide.

Spectacular
It's been so lovely to wake up to the sound of the sea each morning, and even to take a dip on New Year's Day! It's such a lovely house and so convenient for beach walks, sea swims and general holiday fun. We loved enjoying our evenings up in the games room upstairs - it's so cosy and the view is just spectacular. I'm sure we'll be back at some point!

The gwithian guide

Surfers

Water-sports Wonderland

With its rolling waves, golden sands and stunning sunsets, Gwithian and the surrounding beaches are a watersports lover’s paradise, a stone’s throw from our Gwithian Towans holiday cottages. Seasonal lifeguards serve the beach here, so it’s a safe place for those wanting to get in the water and discover what St Ives Bay has to offer in terms of aquatic adrenaline. Take advantage of Gwithian’s decent swell and jump on a surfboard with the help from our friends at Global Boarders. When the wind whips up, you can join the kitesurfers soaring over the waves.

If you’d rather just get in the water without a board, the sea swimming is simply spectacular. Time it right and you can be out in a calm sea, watching the sun sink below the Atlantic. Or, get up with the larks to have the beach to yourself on a summer morning before even the sand has warmed up. With plenty of shallow waters and rock pools to explore it’s also the perfect place to bring the kids with a bat and ball for some simple family holiday fun.

Safe, sheltered sand pools

Our Gwithian Towans chalets and cottages make an ideal base for families. As the tide retreats back across Gwithian’s golden sands, it reveals a myriad of rock pools and sand pools that heat up under the summer sun, creating safe, warm shallows that are perfect for kids to play in. Gwithian has seasonal lifeguards too, so children can try their hand sea swimming and bodyboarding worry free. For those with a four-legged friend in tow, make for the south-westerly section of Gwithian and the beaches beyond, where dogs are free to frolic, cooling off in the many sand pools along the way.

The vast expanse of beach exposed at low tide serves as a fantastic pitch for beach games, whether it’s rounders, cricket or football. Gathering up a group of friends or family for a match is an idyllic way to spend an evening. For post-game refreshments, head up into the Towans, fire up a barbecue and watch as the sun sinks down behind the Atlantic.

Cornish walking holidays Gwithian South West Coast Path

Miles of coastal footpath

With cliff walks to the east and gentle strolls through the dog friendly dunes to the west, Gwithian has direct access to fantastic walking. Head east along Gwithian beach and you’ll discover the steep cliffs at Godrevy Head, a stark contrast to the gentle slope down to sea level found at Gwithian. Peer carefully over the edge to Mutton’s Cove to count the seals lounging on the beach below, or continue further along the cliff for stunning views of the dramatic north Cornish coastline.

These north cliffs also join up with one of Cornwall’s richest woodland areas, Tehidy Woods. Home to friendly squirrels and a great cafe, these paths provide cooler shady walking during the summer months and sheltered strolls in the winter. Walk west from Gwithian and you’ll be greeted with beach, beach and more beach, stretching all the way to St Ives. With gentle sandy tracks, quiet lanes and almost continuous views across St Ives Bay, this gentle section of the coastal footpath is dog friendly all year round.

Beaches
Gwithian beach dunes, Cornwall

Gwithian

Backed by sand dunes, with a gentle golden slope leading down to clear waters, Gwithian’s lifeguarded shores are perfect for beach life. When the wind blows, watch surfers take on the Atlantic waves and kite surfers take to the air, with seasonal lifeguards looking on. If you want to test the waves yourself, you’ll find board hire and lessons, as well as kayaking, paddleboarding and coasteering, at Global Boarders, just behind the dunes. On a calm day, the waters are dotted with swimmers, families playing beach games and kids finding their feet with bodyboards.

Godrevy lighthouse, Gwithian beach, Cornwall

Godrevy

With its rocky outcrops, great surf and sheltered shores perfect for sunbathers, Godrevy is the beach for those looking to find their own secluded spot of sand. Godrevy is under the watchful eye of seasonal lifeguards, so children can play happily in the sea, or explore the many rockpools and sandpools. Godrevy beach and the grassy cliff above looks out towards Godrevy Lighthouse, the inspiration behind Virginia Woolfe’s To The Lighthouse. It’s one of our favourite spots to watch the sun set, turning the sky a deep red as the sun slips down behind the lighthouse. The Godrevy Beach Cafe in the National Trust carpark is great.

Gwithian Beach and dunes, St Ives Bay, Cornwall

Hayle’s beaches

Gwithian is flanked to the east by a number of beaches that make up the three miles of sand that stretches across St Ives Bay to Hayle Estuary. Upton Towans, Mexico Towans and Hayle Beach are all dog friendly all year round, and they all interconnect as the tide goes out. The grassy dunes behind them are a perfect spot for a barbecue and there are caves to discover at low tide, just a stone’s throw from our Gwithian Towans chalets. From wartime structures to pillars used to facilitate the extraction of tin from the sand over a hundred years ago, there’s plenty to see for those who don’t fancy lounging in the sun all day.

Food & drink
Sunset Surf cafe at Gwithian beach, Cornwall

Cool cafes

Right on Gwithian’s sand, the quirky Hungry Horsebox Co is housed in a converted horsebox. They do a delicious dhal and great coffee. Set just back from the beach, Sunset Surf Cafe overlooks the beautiful beach and is a great spot for some hearty homemade food and a crisp glass of local cider. It’s also home to the surf school Global Boarders. With its showstopping views, The Jam Pot is an idyllic location for a tea or coffee stop, a mouthwatering bacon sandwich or a generous helping of cake. At the other end of the beach, the kid friendly, dog friendly and surfer friendly Godrevy Beach Cafe serves everything you’d want after a blustery beach walk or surf, from delicious breakfasts to indulgent hot chocolates. Grab a table upstairs for a brilliant view of Godrevy lighthouse.

Pubs and restaurants

A couple of miles up the road, Trevaskis Farm Restaurant is a great place for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Their seasonal lunch and supper menus include dishes such as crusted sea bream and lobster thermidor, and their Sunday roasts are very popular. In the centre of Gwithian, the Red River Inn is open every day for breakfast, lunch and evening meals, with plenty of local produce and Cornish ales on offer. It holds a popular annual beer festival at Easter. Behind the dunes at the far end of Gwithian beach, the Rookpool is full of sandy footed surfers and  serves small bites and sharing plates, hearty main meals, such as sea platters and seafood chowders, burgers and ribs.

Eating local in Gwithian and Hayle

With two brilliant farm shops within a couple of miles of the village and delis, ice cream parlours and pasty shops in neighbouring Hayle, it’s easy to get your hands on local produce in Gwithian, from fresh fish and meat to veg and local cheeses.

Things to do
Surfing at Gwithian Beach, Cornwall

Take to the water

Gwithian is one of the most popular surfing spots on the north coast, and for good reason — it regularly welcomes medium sized clean surf to its shores, so it’s brilliant for all abilities. There are numerous surf schools around Gwithian and Godrevy, including Global Boarders, which is located at the Sunset Surf cafe near the Gwithian Towans carpark. They cater to all ages and abilities, and they also offer coasteering, kayaking and paddleboard hire and lessons, too.

Red Panda At Paradise Park, St Ives Bay, Cornwall

Paradise Park

With over a hundred species of birds, this brilliant wildlife park in Hayle is home to eagles, parrots and flamingoes, as well as Red Pandas, otters, and a petting zoo. Paradise Park caters for all ages too, with penguin feeding, a jungle train, free flying shows and the chance to hold a barn owl, make sure you check out their website to find out when these events are on. If the kids still aren’t tired out, make sure you take them to the Jungle Barn, Paradise Park’s whopping soft play area. A thoroughly entertaining way to spend a day!

Seals Mutton Cove Gwithian, Godrevy

Seal spotting

All year round, if you head across Godrevy Point to Mutton Cove and peer carefully over the cliff edge, you should be able to spot the herd of seals taking shelter on the beach down below. Watch them head out to sea and swim, their heads bobbing in the waves like little black buoys, or see fluffy grey pups lollop across the sand. If you’re lucky enough, you may be able to spot them in the water off Godrevy and Gwithian beaches, or take a boat trip with St Ives Boat Company and spot them lounging on the lighthouse island.

  • Stunning new extension

Thank you so much for a fourth visit to your wonderful house, this time with its stunning new extension. It's a new experience for us to be here in Autumn, but we just love it and are so happy to be back. We have been incredibly lucky with the weather to explore our old haunts. Coming here has taught us to live again after the pandemic; we had forgotten just how good it is to get out and about.

  • Wow!

The house - wow! Tastefully decorated with a range of quirky pieces of art. The space was incredible, and there was always some little nook to retreat to if we wanted some 'alone' time. Our tenth visit to Gwithian but by far the best accommodation we have stayed in. The weather was amazing and we didn't feel the need to go anywhere but the beach. After a terrible year of isolation, loneliness and grief, we can't tell you how magical our visit was.

Another good week in Gwithian, difficult to beat this beach for surfing and space. Mixed weather, but our group of 6 teenage boys and one girl aged 20 were almost oblivious...thank you for the flowers, biscuits, milk etc....a lovely welcome. Would recommend the Salt Bar in Hay;e for great after-sruf food, and Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens for its lovely garden, nursery, cafe and gallery (also the riding stables of the same name).

  • So bright, light and cheerful.

A wonderful house, with a very spacious living area, so bright, light and cheerful, but with a smaller room to go to for games and a second TV. The location is perfect for communing with nature on the sand dunes, the coastal path and on the beautiful sandy beach with its many rocks and caves, as well as the seals at Godrevy. What more could you ask for? It's so refreshing and restorative to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and just relax here.

Shelia and Gordon — March 2017
  • It's a little piece of paradise!

This is my first time in Cornwall and I'm just blown away by this amazing place. Today is the day we leave and I really don't want to go home! It's a little piece of paradise. We have felt close to nature, the changing weather has provided a stunning back drop every day. I will miss the sound of the crashing waves and long walks along the beach. My favourite moment each day has been watching the sunset from the cliffs before returning to this beautiful house for dinner!

  • Most relaxing, wonderful and refreshing stay.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the most relaxing, wonderful and refreshing stay in your beautiful house!! We have absolutly loved exploring the beautiful, wild coastal countryside around Gwithian, so much so that we barely felt the need to go further afield. From body boarding and searching for sheels and pebbles on the beach, to playing ball in the dunes and searching for dinosaurs in the caves, there's been plenty to keep our little boys happy even in stormy weather.
Coming back to the warmth of your bright home for games and chill out is perfect. Would recommend the Sunset Surf Cafe for hot chocolates and beers and wet suits and friendly advice. Trevaskis Farm Shop in Connor Downs for great local food and luxury organic goods. St Ives for fish and chips at the harbour and beautiful sculpture gardens at the Barbara Hepworth house.

Helen, Thomas, Markus and Edward — March 2016

The Frasers, Weybridge — June 2017
  • It has the 'wow factor!'

We had a wonderful stay at 'Surf Six' — it has a 'wow factor' about it, as does the beach. Despite, on one outing, the horizontal, driving rain, we surfed every day!
We had the most marvellous walk back along the beach, following a delicious meal at the Rock Pool Cafe and spotted two seals — magical!
Thank you for a great holiday in such an idyllic location. Hope to return soon.
