HOLIDAY HOME WITH RIVER VIEWS, HELFORD, CORNWALL

Helford Farmhouse

A handsome Georgian farmhouse on the Helford, with idyllic river views

Sleeps 7+1 in 4 bedrooms Saturday arrival One small, well-behaved dog welcome
The Retreat

At the head of the Helford River, in the peaceful village of Gweek, lies this impressive farmhouse. This elegant home-from-home has character inside and out, with abundant space and glorious gardens which look out over the meandering waters. Sleeping seven, this is the ideal retreat for exploring the spectacular Lizard Peninsula and serene Helford River estuary.

Inside

As you make your way through Gweek, you can’t miss the beautiful Helford Farmhouse, set back from the road in the centre of the village. Through the garden gate, you approach the wisteria-clad house up a gravel path flanked by manicured lawns. The wide blue door opens into a large hallway, with antique oak floors, high ceilings and a winding staircase leading to bedrooms above. To your left is the living room, a cosy space with a wood burner framed by a large stone fireplace, where you can curl up on the stylish blue sofas in front of the TV or browse the shelves brimming with books.  In the bay window,  you will find a desk for penning postcards or catching up on a few emails. Wide sash windows offer stunning views stretching down the garden towards the river.

The kitchen is flooded with light from two windows which look over a sheltered courtyard fringed with roses. The comfy window seat is the perfect place to keep the cook company with a glass of wine. The space has a lovely farmhouse feel, with chestnut worktops, a double Belfast sink, central island and the Rayburn — perfect for slow cooking on lazy days at home (a hot plate and convection oven is also provided). Next door, the sunny dining room seats eight  with sweeping river views. Also off the kitchen is a boot room with washing machine and a bathroom with walk-in shower.  Completing the downstairs is a lovely garden room at the front of the house — perfect for boardgames in the evening or a morning yoga session.

Heading up the stairs, you have big views of the gardens and rolling fields beyond through a beautiful arched window. The principal bedroom and bedroom Two, both with king beds, have wonderful views of boats on the Helford. Bedroom three is a twin with built-in wardrobe and faces the garden, and bedroom four is a single with trundle bed underneath which looks out over the estuary. Also upstairs is a WC and a family bathroom with a shower and decadent roll top bath.

Outside

With gardens both to the front and the back of this magnificent home, you’ll be able to find a sunny spot at any time of the day. Enjoy a morning coffee as the sun rises over the boats in front of the house; in the evening, fire up the barbecue for dinners al fresco on the enclosed patio. Beyond, the large sloping lawn is surrounded by mature shrubs and trees, including roses, apple trees and an ancient magnolia tree.

Gweek village is a hidden gem on the Helford, a thriving community with a lively local pub, The Black Swan, The Boatyard Café in the heart of the boatyard — both just minutes away by foot — and a well-stocked village shop and post office. Your trip isn’t complete without visiting the famous Cornish Seal Sanctuary in the village, which rescues and rehabilitates scores of seal pups every year, as well as being home to some permanent seal residents. Gweek is also in the perfect location for those who want to explore both the Lizard Peninsula, with its rugged cliffs and sandy beaches, and the Helford River, with its gentle waters and hidden creeks.

Things we love

Due to its ideal location, there certainly isn’t a shortage of things to do at Helford Farmhouse. Gweek is a vibrant community, and we recommend you pop to the shop for a pasty, relax in the Boathouse Cafe for a coffee or stop by at the local pub for a tipple. Being at the head of the Helford — getting out on a kayak or paddleboard is a magical way to explore the creeks around here. A day out in the Lizard Peninsula will also be on the cards. It’s a small but diverse part of Cornwall, and you could be on a blustery clifftop walk one minute and relaxing on a secluded river beach the next.

Back at the farmhouse, there’s plenty of space for you and your group of friends to spread out, relax and talk of the day’s adventures. It’s impossible to not feel immersed by the historic home and its unique setting on the Helford. You’ll find it particularly difficult to leave its beautiful, private gardens, made for lounging, entertaining and al fresco dining. We love Helford Farmhouse for its character which, like Gweek, hasn’t changed for generations.

A very beautiful property
This is a very beautiful property in a wonderful location. There is also a beautifully kept and quite spacious garden. We had four adults and four young children and all of us fit in comfortably. Gweek itself is a nice little village with a really good shop, cafe and pub, there is also fish and chips on the green on Wednesday nights with a brass band. We had a great time, lovely place.

Location

Gweek

To the west of Falmouth forming one side of the Lizard Peninsula, the Helford River is one of Cornwall’s most beautiful and dramatic areas. Here you will find scenic wooded creeks, typical Cornish villages, award-winning sub-tropical gardens and access to some of the quieter beaches of Cornwall. The river has a rich history and has long been one of the most important in Cornwall. A few fishing boats still head out to sea from here and it’s a haven for leisure boating and yachts – as well as for wildlife. There are mussel and oyster beds here too, and rich farmland, giving the area a great reputation for food and drink.

Guests Say
  • Beautiful place

We've had the most glorious week in this beautiful place — a whole week of sunshine! Our favourite things: Praa Sands, paddle boarding on the Helford, kayaking out of Mullion, Kynance beach, a beer on Coverack harbour wall for old times' sake, and fish and chips on the green — there's even a band! Pub quiz also fun and friendly. Ferry Boat Inn great, especially if you can get a table with a view and of course, sundowners in the lovely garden.

  • A very beautiful property

This is a very beautiful property in a wonderful location. There is also a beautifully kept and quite spacious garden. We had four adults and four young children and all of us fit in comfortably. Poldhu beach is about 12 minutes away by car, which is honestly one of the best beaches in Cornwall and there are lots of others not far. Porthleven is also close. Helford is close too. Gweek itself is a nice little village with a really good shop, cafe and pub, there is also fish and chips on the green on Wednesday nights with a brass band. It seemed like all of the locals were in attendance. We had a great time, lovely place.

  • Magic

Thank you for a really lovely stay. We loved all the thoughtful touches of fresh flowers and children's books. And the views from the bedrooms windows...they were just magic.

  • Loved staying here

Thank you for sharing your home with us. We have loved staying here. I very much enjoyed the books on art and the paintings and easel made me feel very much at home. We have enjoyed Gweek and the surrounding area and meeting the locals. We have been to so many dog friendly beaches but our favourite was Gunwalloe - when the tide went out it revealed amazing hidden rock pools and beautiful golden sand. It was our pup's first birthday and I can honestly say I've never seen her so happy. Will be heading home tomorrow sun bleached and sandy but with the biggest smiles.

  • Tranquility

Thank you for sharing your beautiful home! We have really enjoyed the spacious house and tranquility of the grounds. Perfect for our group to have space to relax. Gweek is charming and we enjoyed surfing at Poldhu beach. A visit or two to the seal sanctuary is also a lovely pastime. The New Yard restaurant was a very special place for an anniversary dinner.

  • Couldn't have asked for more

We had a fabulous week. Great location, beautiful house, couldn't have asked for more. The village stores down the road is superb and everything else was perfect. The location is ideal as you're never more than a few minutes drive from beaches or nearby attractions. Safe to say, we'll be back as it's the best house/location we've had in the area in many years!

  • Lovely

Lovely old house in a lovely location with great beaches all nearby. Lots of facilities in the village, great pub and well stocked shop. Brilliant host with lots of local information. Paddle boarding in Porthleven was a highlight as was beautiful Kynance Cove. When the sun shines you can't beat Cornwall!

  • The most fantastic time

We had the most fantastic time in Cornwall largely due to this accommodation being so well set up for our family. Really clean and child friendly with lots of outdoor space for the kids to play in. Great bbq area and lounge for relaxing in the evening. Lovely views from the main bedroom and dining area of the Helford. Really well situated with village shop, pub and boat yard cafe within a five minute walk and close to the seal sanctuary. Thank you for having us - we will be back.
