Out and about in Porthtowan and the surrounding area
Nestled between rugged cliffs on Cornwall’s north coast, Porthtowan is a seaside gem with striking scenery and a wonderfully relaxed vibe. It’s the kind of place that works beautifully for a Cornish break year-round — whether you’re seeking adventure or simply want to slow down and soak up the setting. Staying at Mulberry means you’re just a few minutes’ stroll from the village centre.
Porthtowan’s Blue Flag beach is a favourite with surfers, swimmers and families. Summer days are all about sandy toes, rock pooling, and lazy barbecues as the sun sets, with surf lessons and equipment hire available if you’d like to get out on the waves. In season, lifeguards are on duty (check times here). Families will love the play area just above the sand and the tidal pool that appears at low tide. Come autumn and winter, the bay transforms into an awe-inspiring spot for bracing walks and dramatic storm watching. At low tide you can walk along the beach to the neighbouring beach at Chapel Porth, and then back along the coast path to Porthtowan, stopping for a coffee break at the infamous cafe at Chapel Porth Beach.
The village has everything you need for a memorable stay, with a handy shop and a brilliant choice of places to eat and drink. Watch the sun go down at the legendary Blue Bar, tuck into hearty pub classics at The Unicorn, or grab award-winning fish and chips from Seasmith’s. The Beach Café is ideal for a cosy bite, while Moomaid of Zennor’s ice cream parlour will keep sweet tooths more than happy.
The South West Coast Path passes straight through Porthtowan, offering some of the most spectacular coastal walking in Cornwall. Head east towards Chapel Porth and the iconic engine house ruins of Wheal Coates, or continue to St Agnes, with its bustling pubs, cafés and the award-winning Peterville Inn. To the west, dramatic cliff-top trails lead towards Portreath, with breathtaking views and regular sightings of seals and seabirds.
Porthtowan is also a brilliant base for day trips further afield. In half an hour or less, you can be wandering through art galleries in St Ives, exploring Falmouth’s maritime history, shopping in Truro’s cathedral city, or crossing the causeway to St Michael’s Mount. You’re also right in the heart of the UNESCO Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape, with opportunities to explore historic tin mines nearby. For bigger days out, the Eden Project, Minack Theatre and even Land’s End are all within reach.
