Cornwall comes into its own during the summer holidays, with long days, warm seas and plenty going on across the county. Whether you’re visiting for a week or planning a last-minute getaway, there’s lots to see and do for families, couples and solo travellers alike. It’s a brilliant time to explore the coast path, visit hidden coves, and enjoy everything from live music and open-air theatre to beach days and boat trips. From cultural highlights to classic seaside fun, here are some of our favourite things to do in Cornwall this summer.
1. Learn to surf
Summer is the best time to get in the water, and if you’ve never tried surfing before, it’s a great place to start. Several local surf schools in Gwithian, Polzeath and Widemouth Bay offer lessons for all ages and abilities, with soft boards, wetsuits and friendly instructors to help you get started. Lessons are usually 1.5 to 2 hours and can be booked as one-offs or as part of a short course. It’s a brilliant way for the whole family to learn something new together.
2. Take a boat trip
There’s no better way to experience Cornwall’s coastline than from the water. Boat trips run from places like Falmouth, St Ives, Mevagissey and Padstow, with options ranging from gentle river cruises to high-speed sea safaris. Wildlife spotting trips are a summer favourite, with the chance to see dolphins, seals, seabirds and sometimes basking sharks. For something slower, hire a kayak or take the ferry along the Helford or Fal rivers to explore tucked-away coves and creeks.
3. Visit the Eden Project
Known for its giant biomes, the Eden Project offers much more than just plants. Over the summer holidays, the site hosts a packed calendar of family activities, from trails and storytelling to creative workshops. Kids can let off steam in the outdoor play areas while adults enjoy exploring the gardens and art installations. The on-site café serves seasonal dishes made with local ingredients, and thrill-seekers can try the SkyWire, England’s longest zip line.

4. Watch a show at the Minack Theatre
Built into the cliffs at Porthcurno, the Minack Theatre is one of Cornwall’s most iconic venues. Watching a live performance here, with the sea stretching out behind the stage, is an unforgettable experience. The summer programme includes drama, comedy, music and shows for younger audiences too. Bring a cushion, a blanket and a picnic, and settle in for a night of storytelling under the stars. Booking ahead is strongly advised.
5. Find your dream beach
Whether you’re looking for safe paddling spots, dramatic surf or somewhere to bring the dog, Cornwall has a beach for every kind of summer day. Holywell Bay is ideal for exploring dunes and caves, while Gwithian offers wide sands and good surf. Porthcurno’s turquoise water and golden cliffs make it one of the prettiest in the county. Many beaches have lifeguard cover during the holidays and are close to cafés or ice cream stalls for a post-swim treat.
6. Treat your tastebuds
From pop-up food trucks to waterfront restaurants, Cornwall’s food scene thrives in summer. Seafood is the star of many menus, with local mackerel, crab and scallops available fresh from the boat. Visit one of the many markets or food festivals for a taste of regional produce, or pick up picnic supplies from a village deli or farm shop. For something sweet, try a scoop of clotted cream ice cream or a traditional cream tea, jam first of course.
7. Explore the coast path
The South West Coast Path is a brilliant way to explore the landscape at your own pace. Summer brings long, light days and trails edged with wildflowers. Easygoing circular walks like Crantock to Polly Joke or the stretch from St Agnes to Chapel Porth are great for families. You’ll find plenty of places to stop for a paddle, a snack or just to admire the view. Keep your eyes peeled for seabirds, seals and even dolphins along the way.
